CHARACTER

Name: Dean Winchester
Canon: Supernatural
Age: 28
History: here
Point in canon: 4x1
Window Location: Behind the gas station that Dean wanders into after he’s brought back to life and digs himself out of his own grave. Located in Pontiac, IL.
Universe: All those things that you hear about growing up that go bump in the night? They’re real and they’re nasty. There are people who know about them, who protect those that don’t know about them. They’re called hunters and it’s a thankless job. Any place is a possible feeding ground for any number of nasty critters, but that’s why people like Dean are around- to exterminate the problem before it becomes an infestation. This universe also holds all of Christian mythology to be considered true, though in a grittier way than usually portrayed. Angels, archangels, demons, god, satan- the whole nine yards.
Abilities: Dean is proficient in hand to hand combat, as well as firearms and improvised weapons. He’s also pretty damn smooth with the ladies when he wants to be.
Possessions: Jeans, black tshirt, sneakers, beef jerky, a couple dirty magazines
Personality: Outwardly, Dean can come off as a brash, bullheaded, sexist jerk. He mocks people, makes snap decisions, and is more stubborn than a mule. His actions paint, to the casual observer, a clear image of a man who sees it as his way or the highway. He's one of those types that is just sort of used to getting what he wants by either smooth talking or just flat out taking. Not being a fan of being told what to do, Dean takes charge of many situations, making snap decisions in order to get the job done.

But to stop at the surface level of Dean wouldn't really do him any justice. Dean's hardened exterior has a lot to do with the life that he's lived and the things that he's seen. His childhood was anything but typical, and sculpted his outlook on life to be just as unique. Because of all the things that he can’t share with anyone but those that he trusts with absolute certainty, Dean keeps a great deal of his inner thoughts to himself- especially if he believes those around him are better off for not knowing.

Dean's family is a big part of why he acts the way he does. It’s instilled in him that family is everything, that family will always be a constant, and that he has to do everything in his power to keep the most important people in his life as safe as possible. Time and time again, he throws himself in front of danger in order to take the blow so that his father and brother don’t have to. He demonstrates this most poignantly in the series when he makes a deal with a crossroads demon- offering his soul in a year’s time in return for his brother to be brought back to life. All of this probably has a great deal to do with the fact that he was too young to be able to stop the demon Azazel from killing his mother. The traumatic event caused a tremor of loss, which in turn created a need to hold on tightly to those who are closest to him.

Dean strives to be similar to his father, which is obvious in the way that he conducts himself in many situations. His need for approval has caused him to idolize his father, creating the image of what a man is meant to become- a superhero. The unrealistic expectations for himself cause Dean to constantly feel like a failure for not being able to reach the unattainable goal. Still, he doesn’t give up, because he knows that his father would never want him to give up. And it is in the attempt to be the best sort of man that he can be that Dean manages to actually achieve so many of his goals without realizing. He rarely notices the appreciation that people have for the work that he and his brother do- not because he doesn’t care about the people that he’s saving, but because he doesn’t see the work as needing appreciation. It’s not a job with a paycheck- it’s the right thing to do, and he doesn’t necessarily expect for people to thank him for doing the right thing.

It's pretty obvious that he cares about his brother. He's the older sibling, so it's just natural to protect and boss around Sam on a regular basis. It's something so natural that he's can't even stop himself. Sure, they're both adults, but Dean's been looking out for Sam since day one. His father gave him the task at a very young age, and Dean grew up accepting it as a responsibility he couldn't avoid. That doesn't mean he ever ENJOYED the job. Like any typical older brother, Dean goes through all stages of siblinghood- from loving being a big brother, to liking having someone think he's so cool, to thinking that little brothers are stupid and annoying, to being too self involved to give a damn about what Sam thinks, to realizing that he's got a built in best friend. The full spectrum causes Dean to recognize the best and worst of his brother, which only makes him appreciate Sam more in the long run. As adults, Dean doesn’t always understand his brother, but at the end of the day, the little shit is the best thing he’s got going for him. The way that they butt heads is good for him, even if Dean would never admit that. The one thing that Dean will never have a problem owning up to is that he would do anything to keep Sam safe. Throughout the series, he constantly proves this, in both words and actions. The mere threat of his brother’s life is enough to spur Dean into action, which is often used against him.

The nature of Dean’s childhood and the way that people have come in and out of his life with such frequency makes Dean reluctant to let anyone in. He guards his emotions and thoughts with ferocity unmatched by many. Women especially seem to be more fluid for Dean, as they're more of a passing comfort in most cases than real companionship. This isn't an absolute, but most women seem to move in an out of his life on HIS terms, rather than theirs. It is in this that Dean finds a sense of control, not over the women, but over his own life. There is so much chaos, and yet in these instances, he is the only one to make the choices. He decides which woman to seduce, which bed to lie in, which number to actually save. Dean’s reputation as a womanizer is actually a way to grant himself a sense of power over his own life. It also allows him the ability to avoid being hurt by anyone. If he doesn’t let them in, they can’t possibly learn enough about him to break through the intense walls he’s put up in defense.

This isn’t limited to sexual companionship, as early in Season 1, Dean seems honestly confused by Sam’s desire to keep in touch with his college friends. Friends, much like possible sexual partners, are more of a fleeting thought for Dean, as he knows that he is going to be constantly on the move, so the effort needed to keep up his end of any relationship outside of the hunting circle is going to be much more than he could ever be willing to grant. To dedicate that much of himself to other people not involved in his lifestyle would be to make him vulnerable, and to put those people in constant danger. Dean strives to keep as many people (him included) safe at one time as possible. If this means that he has to keep his distance, for his own sake and for theirs, he will.

Dean also manages to use harsh humor as a way of deflecting his true feelings. A master of wit and sarcasm, and the ever impressive art of the scoff, this is not to claim that Dean is not sometimes 100% serious when he uses crude humor or sarcasm. He is, to put it bluntly, a collection of the most offensive traits a man could possess at times. Inappropriate jokes have never come easier to a person than they do to Dean Winchester. Many times, it’s clear that he enjoys the shock value of his words, enjoying the way that he can get a rise out of people by being wildly obscene. In other instances, one has to wonder if he’s merely using the crude behavior as a way to avoid speaking plainly and honestly about less than pleasant feelings. He manages a healthy use of honest mocking and purposeful outlandish statements, and masters the use of them so fluidly that it is difficult at times to know what his true intent is with the humor.

However, Dean has many positive traits as well. He’s not all rough edges and cold shoulder. When he wants to, Dean can be downright charming. Usually, he uses a witty line or a brilliant smile to get around some obstacle (whether it is to successfully seduce a woman or to convince someone of a lie he's spinning). Due to his line of work, and the nature of not being able to form many lasting relationships with others, we rarely see Dean use his powers of charm for much else but a leg up. The fact that the ability exists, though, proves that Dean knows what people want to hear. He may not always be in the mood to cater to such desires, but he knows how to read people, if he’s willing to take the time.

Respect for authority is a mixed bag for Dean. He was raised by a Marine, a father he came to know as Sir nearly as often as he knew him as Dad. A clear hierarchy was established in the Winchester household once Dean’s mother died, and it’s very possible that it was this strict upbringing that helped to keep Dean and Sam alive while out of the road at such a young age. Regardless, while Sam balked at his father’s authority, Dean grew up with a strong respect for the methods that his father implemented, and respected the hell out of the man well into legal adulthood. His respect for authority seems to be circumstantial as a means for his own survival, though, as the local police, and even federal officials are something of a joke to Dean. He is well aware of how much they don’t know and does his damndest to keep them out of his business. However, when it comes to other hunters, Dean recognizes the authority of some people who have been in the business longer than he has- and therefore know more than he does, in many cases. Bobby Singer, for instance, acts as a second father to Dean and Sam, and while Dean may not always agree with Bobby’s opinion on matters, he respects the hell out of the man. Respect and blind faith are nothing close to the same, and it is in Dean’s interactions with Bobby and other older hunters like him that we can see the plain difference.

A person is not comprised of their interests and favorites, but to describe Dean Winchester without bringing up his taste in music, cars, and food would do his a disservice. To look at a list of Dean’s favorite things, one could not possibly mistake him as anything but an American boy, born and bred. Dean’s car is an extension of him, a show of his pride and all the things about himself that he wants to project to the world. He is classic, just like his car, just like his rock. There is a timeless manliness that he is constantly striving to portray. His love of fast food and diner food may be a learned adoration, as that is most (if not all) of what his diet consists of at any given time. To lay it out in simplest terms, though, Dean is a man who drives a Mustang, listens to classic rock, and eats cheeseburgers and apple pie. The fact that his travels take him through the heart of small town America only further highlight just how customary his interests are for the archetype of the American man.

Many times, Dean and his brother are forced to play a part in order to get the information that they need to finish a job. Dean's confidence often makes him easy to believe. He doesn't always have to look the part in order to convince those around him that he’s an official of some sort. He commands an audience, expects respect, and doesn’t seem surprised when it comes without question. Dean’s confidence in himself, his knowledge, and his abilities often aid him in immense ways, as he’s not bogged down by second guessing his ability to complete a task. Instead, he’s already halfway finished with it, and moving on to the next.

Dean’s experience in Hell marks a change to his personality, especially early after his return to Earth. The torture alone would be enough to change a man, but it was more the fact that Dean gives in to Alistair’s offer- the fact that Dean gives in and tortures souls in order to save himself from the pain- that effects him more strongly. All the strength that Dean believed that he possessed was found to have a breaking point. And more than that, Dean confesses to Sam that it is more disturbing to him that he actually enjoyed inflicting pain on those souls. He became the sort of monster that he had spent his entire life fighting. Realizing that he is so flawed, that he had it within him to sink to such a vile level broke Dean of all of his conceptions of himself. Saddled with an insurmountable amount of guilt, Dean again places a great deal of pressure upon himself to make up for his wrong doings, while at the same time acknowledging that he cannot ever actually do anything to take away what he has done.

Prose Sample: Dean’s palms struck the steering wheel in time with the music blasting from the speakers. Outside, the world rolled by as he took a right turn at a green light, belting lyrics to the song – Lynyrd Skynard’s “Saturday Night Special” with the windows down. Dean’s sense of shame was nonexistent as he drove through the quiet town. There was a burger joint on the other side of town that Dean had been dying to try, so without much more than a “back in fifteen” to Sam, he had hopped in the car and headed out.

“Got a barrel that’s blue and cold. Ain’t no good for nothin’ but put a man six feet in a hole.” It was hard not to see how appropriate the lyrics were, but Dean was doing his damndest not to think about it. Not thinking about something was one of the hardest conscious decisions he’d ever had to make, and it was one he had been trying to make on a regular basis. If the dedication to his drumming was any indication, he was doing a bang up job today. Instead of wallowing in his emotions, Dean planned on drowning them in about a pound of grease. As he pulled into the parking lot, he turned the volume down on his radio. The song was nearly over anyway.

Leaving his car and crossing the parking lot, Dean pushed open the door to the diner and gave a quick look around. It wasn’t anything that he wasn’t used to, but for some reason, the claim to have the best bacon burger in 100 miles was a boast that Dean hoped to test.

“Have a seat wherever you’d like, sugar.” An older waitress told him once his gaze fell close to her. Dean gave a nod and a small, thankful smile. He found a booth near the back and slid himself in to one side, grabbing a menu and flipping it open, even if he knew what he wanted.“What can I do you for?” The same middle-aged woman said a moment later, pen and paper in hand.

“Heard you’ve got a decent bacon burger. Thought I’d give it a try.” He slid the menu away from him and folded his hands. “Side of fries and a Coke.” He flashed a charming smile. Someone moving caught his attention at the edge of his vision, but Dean kept his focus on the sassy waitress.

“You got it.” She said, turning on her heels and heading towards the kitchen. With that taken care of, Dean turned his head to find out what had been nagging at him earlier. What he found was an empty booth, which was possibly more disturbing. He tried to shake it off, but even as he turned around, Dean knew that something wasn’t right. Unfortunately, his best guess what the “something” was had to do with him.

He should have expected the flashes, the glimpses of things that weren’t there. But a person was never ready to cope with the after effects of what he’d seen, what he’d felt, what he’d done. Dean closed his eyes briefly, turning his head slightly away from the window, as if the outside world was one he still wasn’t fully ready to face. As much as he constantly tried to act like he was the same old Dean doing the same old things, it wasn’t. He wasn’t. He might never be.
Plans: Be awesome
Notes: I’m so excited about this game, you have no idea :3

DÆMON

Name: Roxanne/”Roxie”/”Scrappy”
Sex: Female
Form: Dog/”mutt” - visual
Additional notes: A dark patch on her upper chest on the left side, the same general spot as Dean’s anti-possession tattoo. It doesn’t actually have a distinct shape- just a dark splotch in the same area.
Why this form: Above all else, Dean is loyal. Beyond that, he’s easily excitable, rarely serious, dangerous when necessary, and always hungry. I didn’t want to pick any particular breed for Dean, because his life has been such a mish mash of various influences that no one particular breed stuck out as the “right” one.
